BMW has unveiled an extensive range of M Performance Parts for the newly launched BMW M5, marking a significant milestone in the model's illustrious 40-year history. For the first time, this high-performance sedan integrates an electrified drive system, introducing a unique blend of power and efficiency. The new BMW M5, equipped with a model-specific M HYBRID system, achieves a remarkable combined output of 535 kW/727 hp and a peak torque of 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft). This formidable performance is facilitated by the combination of a high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor, coupled with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive all-wheel drive. This setup enables the M5 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.5 seconds.

Striking Exterior Design: Aerodynamics Meets Style

The exterior design of the new BMW M5 exudes power and purism, further enhanced by the addition of BMW M Performance Parts. These parts are meticulously crafted from high-tech carbon fiber, ensuring both weight savings and a distinctive aesthetic appeal. The standout feature is the two-section M Performance rear diffuser made from carbon fiber, available with M Performance tailpipe trims in a titanium/carbon fiber mix. This combination adds a strikingly modern and sporty look to the car's rear end. The tailpipe trims feature milled titanium end rings and an embossed M5 logo, enhancing the sedan's imposing presence.

Additional aerodynamic enhancements include the M Performance front splitter and side skirts, both crafted from carbon fiber. These components not only accentuate the vehicle's dynamic lines but also optimize its aerodynamic efficiency. The front splitter prominently showcases the central lower air intake, now split by a central partition, reinforcing the car's aggressive stance.

Enhanced Interior Customization

Inside the M5, the customization continues with M Performance floor mats featuring decorative stitching and M Performance badging. For a touch of exclusivity, the M Performance fuel tank cap in carbon fiber and the elegant M Performance key case in black fine-grain nappa leather add refined details. Even the customer’s garage can exude a racing spirit with M Performance tire bags, which include a logo in BMW M GmbH colors and reinforced handles for easy transport. From summer 2025, M Performance light-alloy wheels will also be available, providing further opportunities for customization and performance enhancement.

Power and Performance: M HYBRID Drive System

The M HYBRID drive system in the new BMW M5 combines a 4.4-litre V8 engine with classical high-revving characteristics and an electric motor, whose performance characteristics are tuned specifically for the BMW M5. The combustion engine benefits from cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology, a cross-bank exhaust manifold, and optimized oil separation. It develops a maximum output of 430 kW/585 hp and peak torque of 750 Nm (553 lb-ft). The electric motor delivers a maximum output of 145 kW/197 hp, with nominal torque of 280 Nm (206 lb-ft), but a pre-gearing stage allows effective torque at the transmission input to be increased to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft).

The combination of combustion engine and electric motor adheres to the same principle as the drive system in the BMW M Hybrid V8 endurance racing machine. This setup ensures immediate power availability and seamless interaction between the combustion engine and electric motor, providing a linear power delivery typical of BMW M models. The V8 engine can spin up to a maximum of 7,200 rpm, offering relentless power development across the load and speed ranges. The standard top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph), but this can be raised to 305 km/h (189 mph) with the optional M Driver’s Package.

Acoustic and Electric Performance

The sports exhaust system of the new BMW M5 enhances the performance experience with a multi-faceted and emotionally captivating engine note. It features electrically controlled, continuously adjustable flaps and two pairs of dual tailpipes, each with 100-millimeter trims in Black Chrome.

The electric motor's power delivery is complemented acoustically by BMW IconicSounds Electric. This M-specific electric drive sound provides authentic responses to accelerator movements when the car operates in all-electric mode. With the appropriate drive system configuration, it also creates an engaging soundtrack to highlight the additional electric power on top of the V8 engine's output.

In all-electric mode, the new BMW M5 can reach speeds of up to 140 km/h (87 mph). The high-voltage battery located low in the car’s underbody has a usable energy capacity of 18.6 kWh, enabling an electric range of 67-69 kilometers (42-43 miles) in the WLTP cycle, unmatched by any rival. The Combined Charging Unit of the new BMW M5 supports AC charging at up to 7.4 kW.

Advanced Chassis and Handling

The power generated by the combustion engine and electric motor is channeled to the road via the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, whose rear-biased setup is particularly pronounced in 4WD Sport mode. Drivers can also select 2WD mode, which sends drive exclusively to the rear wheels with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system switched off, appealing to experienced drivers who prefer a pure performance experience. This further developed iteration of M xDrive, along with the electronically controlled Active M Differential at the rear axle, is tailored specifically to the performance characteristics of the M HYBRID drive system.

The chassis design of the new BMW M5 includes a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle with bespoke kinematics and elastokinematics, plus many other specially tuned components. The electrically assisted rack-and-pinion steering with M Servotronic and variable steering ratio has a rigid connection to the front axle subframe to ensure optimal feedback from the road and high directional accuracy. Combined with wide tracks and excellent torsional rigidity of the body and chassis mountings, this setup produces the renowned handling attributes of BMW M models, characterized by agility, precision, and the linear build-up of lateral forces.

Sophisticated Assistance Systems

The new BMW M5 offers a significantly expanded range of standard and optional systems for automated driving and parking, enhancing assurance and comfort in day-to-day driving. Standard features include front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning with lane return and steering assistance, the Evasion Assistant, the Attentiveness Assistant, and the Speed Limit Info system. The optional Driving Assistant Professional adds Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Steering and Lane Control Assistant, traffic light detection, automatic Speed Limit Assist, and Active Navigation.

The new BMW M5 comes standard with the Parking Assistant, including the Reversing Assistant. The optional Parking Assistant Professional allows automated parking and maneuvering over a distance of up to 200 meters, controlled from inside the car or via a smartphone from outside the car.

Customization of the Driving Experience

The control panel on the center console of the new BMW M5 houses a model-specific array of buttons that allow the driving experience to be tailored to individual preferences. The Setup button provides direct access to the configuration of the drive system, Drivelogic, chassis, steering, braking system, and M xDrive, as well as the intensity of brake energy recuperation. Two overall vehicle setups can be stored and selected using the M buttons on the steering wheel. The Launch Control function is available in all M Setup menu settings, except for the M xDrive system’s 2WD mode.

Pressing the DSC button activates M Dynamic Mode, which raises the DSC intervention thresholds for brake inputs and engine output reduction. It is also possible to switch DSC off completely. Another button allows the driver to select M Mode. Switching from the default ROAD setting to SPORT restricts driver assistance system interventions and display content to essential functions for sporty driving. With the optional M Drive Professional, TRACK mode is also available, which includes the M Laptimer and Boost Control function for maximizing longitudinal dynamics during mid-range sprints and overtaking maneuvers. The M HYBRID system's operating mode can also be customized. The new M Hybrid button allows the driver to choose between HYBRID mode, for intelligently controlled interplay between the combustion engine and electric motor to maximize efficiency or performance, and ELECTRIC mode, where the combustion engine is only activated by accelerator kickdown or gearshift paddles.
