Fiat VIN Decoder: ZFA, VYF, ZFB and 3C3 Codes

A 2017 Fiat 500 reads ZFA3120000J…. A 2023 Fiat 500e reads ZFAEFAA24NX…. Same ZFA, two different rulebooks: the first has no model year and no check digit, and its J in position 11 is the Tychy plant in Poland, not 2018. The second has a real check digit, the year N in position 10 and X for Mirafiori. Which one are you holding?

What a Fiat VIN actually tells you

ZFA is Fiat's passenger-car code, and it does not mean the car was made in Italy. Fiat puts ZFA on 500s and 600s from Tychy in Poland, on Tipos and Doblòs from Bursa in Turkey, and on 500Ls from Kragujevac in Serbia. The Grande Panda goes the other way: it starts with the French-issued VYF and is built in Kragujevac, plant letter Z.

Until about the 2020 model year, a European Fiat follows the old format: ZFA, a three-digit type code in positions 4 to 6, then 000, then eight characters. Position 9 is always 0, so there is no check digit, and there is no model year. Only 15 of the 124 real VINs from 1997 to 2020 we tried passed the formula, which is chance, because the computed digit happens to be 0. The type code can mislead too: the 500 and the Panda III both carry ZFA312, and a European 500L reads ZFA199, the Punto's type code.

The new Stellantis format arrives with the 500e in 2020 and reaches the Panda and Tipo with model year 2021, the 500X with 2022, and the 600, Grande Panda and Doblò III from launch. Descriptors fill 4 to 8; then come a genuine check digit, the model year and the plant letter. Of 63 real VINs from 2019 to 2026, 62 passed. A 2025 Grande Panda reads VYFCTHPX6SZ…: S is 2025, Z is Kragujevac.

Fiat WMI codes

WMIMeaning
ZFAFiat passenger cars (Stellantis Europe, formerly Fiat Auto): built in Italy, Poland, Turkey and Serbia alike
VYFFiat in the Stellantis era: Doblò III (from 2023) and Grande Panda (from 2025)
ZFBFCA Italy MPV code for North America: 500L and 500X. Also used on the Ram ProMaster City
3C3Chrysler Group car, Mexico: the US and Canadian Fiat 500 from Toluca, 2012 to 2019
3C4Chrysler Group SUV/MPV, Mexico: the Fiat Freemont, sister of the Dodge Journey
JC1Fiat 124 Spider, built by Mazda in Hiroshima (2016 to 2019)
988Stellantis Brazil, Goiana: Fiat Toro, also used for Jeep and the Ram Rampage

Every code here has two independent sources: a manufacturer register (NHTSA vPIC or the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt list) and a separate VIN reference. ZAC is absent on purpose: it is a Jeep and Dodge Hornet code, and the US-market 500X starts ZFB. Plant digits 3 (Pomigliano) and 6 (Bursa) are not mapped, since on a pre-2013 VIN position 11 is only a digit of the running number.

Where your Fiat was built, and what the VIN says about it

A Fiat VIN depends on the year first and the market second. Buying a used Panda in Britain, a 500 in Germany or a US-import 500 in Sweden? Work out which of the three families below you have before you read a single character as a year or a plant.

EU

Europe, old format: ZFA + type code + 000

  • Position 9 is always 0, so the check digit cannot match: amber is expected here, not a sign of a typo.
  • Until about 2012 the last eight characters are a single serial. From 2013 position 10 is 0 and position 11 is the plant: J Tychy (500), P Melfi (500X, Punto), 3 Pomigliano (Panda III), 6 Bursa (Tipo, Doblò).
  • Example: ZFA35600006… is a 2017 Tipo from Bursa, ZFA3340000P… a 2018 500X from Melfi.
EU

Europe, new format: ZFA and VYF with a real check digit

  • The 500e from 2020, Panda and Tipo from model year 2021, 500X from 2022, plus the 600, Grande Panda and Doblò III.
  • Position 9 computes, 10 gives the year, and the letter after it names the plant: X Mirafiori, P Melfi, Z Kragujevac.
  • A mismatch shows red here, because 62 of 63 real VINs we tested passed. The one failure looked like a typo in an advert.
NA

North America: 3C3, ZFB, JC1 and the 500e

  • The Fiat 500 of 2012 to 2019 starts 3C3 and came from Toluca, Mexico, plant letter T. 3C3CFFDR9GT… is a 2016 car.
  • The 500L (Kragujevac) and 500X (Melfi) for the US start ZFB. The 124 Spider starts JC1 because Mazda built it in Hiroshima.
  • The US-market 500e of recent model years starts ZFA with X for Mirafiori. The check digit is mandatory on all of these.

J is Tychy on a 500, Vigo on a Doblò

Generic decoders read position 10 of an old-format Fiat as a model year and position 11 as a plant. On a pre-2013 car both are digits of a running number. On a 2013 to 2020 Fiat 500 the J that a decoder may take for 2018 sits in position 11 and means Tychy. And on a VYF Doblò III, J means Vigo in Spain. Take the year from the registration document, not from the VIN.

Green: the digit in 9 computes. Red: a North American VIN or a new-format ZFA/VYF VIN that fails, since both carry a calculated digit. Amber: an old-format ZFA VIN, where position 9 is a fixed 0 and a mismatch is routine, not a fault in the car.

Model year: position 10 on a Fiat

On a new-format Fiat, position 10 carries the year: N is 2022, S is 2025. On an old-format ZFA car it is a zero or a digit of the serial, and no year is stated at all. Selling or buying in the UK? The V5C gives the date of first registration. In Germany, read field B (first registration) of the Zulassungsbescheinigung. Never read a J in position 11 of a 500 as 2018.

Frequently asked questions

What do the Fiat WMI codes ZFA, VYF, ZFB and 3C3 mean?

ZFA is Fiat passenger cars from Stellantis Europe, whatever the plant. VYF is the French-issued code on the Doblò III and the Grande Panda. ZFB marks the 500L and 500X built for North America, 3C3 the Fiat 500 from Toluca in Mexico, and JC1 the 124 Spider made by Mazda.

Was my ZFA Fiat built in Italy?

Not necessarily. ZFA also sits on 500s and 600s from Tychy in Poland, Tipos and Doblòs from Bursa in Turkey and 500Ls from Kragujevac in Serbia. On a 2013 to 2020 car, read position 11: J is Tychy, P Melfi, 3 Pomigliano d'Arco, 6 Bursa. On a new-format VIN the plant is in position 11 as well.

Why does my 2015 Fiat fail the check digit?

Because it was never meant to pass. The old European format fixes position 9 at 0, so the digit matches only when the formula happens to give 0. Only 15 of 124 real VINs we tested did. A 2021 or later Fiat is different: 62 of 63 passed, so a failure there deserves a character-by-character check.

Why does my Fiat VIN show no model year?

Because an old-format European Fiat does not state one. Positions 7 to 10 are zeros or part of a running number. The year of a 2013 to 2020 car lives in the registration document: field B, date of first registration, on the German Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I, or the V5C in Britain.

Where is the VIN on a Fiat?

It is stamped into the floor beside the driver's seat, under a small hinged plastic cover; on a Panda III or 500X, lift the carpet flap. It also appears at the bottom corner of the windscreen, where you may need to lift the wiper. On paper, look in field E of the EU registration certificate or in the British V5C.

What can't a Fiat VIN tell you?

Trim, paint and options are not in the 17 characters. Even the type code is ambiguous: 312 covers both the 500 and the Panda III. For the rest, ask the seller for the paperwork and the service history.
