VIN Decoder · Polaris
A Polaris quad or side-by-side can come from Minnesota, Alabama, Mexico or Poland, and the first three characters say which: 4XA for the US plants, 3NS and 3NE for Monterrey, TAP for Opole. Characters 4 to 8 repeat part of the model number, so SEA57 is a Sportsman 570 and RRE99 a Ranger XP 1000. Looking at a Ranger in a Danish or Swedish auction? Its VIN probably starts TAP, a code from the Swiss range on a vehicle built in Poland.
0 / 17
Polaris VINs never use I, O or Q. On a stamped frame rail a worn 0 is still a zero, never the letter O.
Polaris filed its VIN layout for off-road vehicles with NHTSA. 4XA marks a vehicle assembled in the US, 3NE an ATV from Mexico, 3NS a side-by-side from Mexico and TAP one assembled in Poland. Positions 4 to 8 are taken straight from the model number. A Sportsman 570 reads SEA57, a Ranger XP 1000 EPS RRE99, an RZR XP 1000 NAE99. The Slingshot three-wheeler has its own code, 57X, and Victory motorcycles carried 5VP.
Polaris treats position 9 as a genuine check digit. Strictly speaking, US law does not even require it here: NHTSA's decoder labels a Sportsman number an off-road vehicle number, not a motor-vehicle VIN. Polaris computes it anyway, per 49 CFR 565.15. We tested 58 ATV and side-by-side VINs from US recall notices, 73 Slingshot VINs from NHTSA recall reports and two Opole-built Rangers sold in Denmark. All of them passed.
Character 10 carries the model year, on the Polish-built TAP vehicles too: a Ranger 570 offered in Denmark as a 2024 model carries R. Position 11 is the plant. A or B means Roseau, Minnesota, 8 means Huntsville, Alabama, F, G, H or N Monterrey, and J, K or L Opole.
| WMI | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 4XA | Polaris, assembled in the US (Roseau, Huntsville): Sportsman, RZR, Ranger, GENERAL. Some 2013–2014 Mexican builds also carry it |
| 3NS | Polaris, side-by-sides assembled in Mexico (Monterrey): RZR since at least 2014, Ranger 570 |
| 3NE | Polaris, ATVs assembled in Mexico (Monterrey) |
| TAP | Polaris Europe, a code from the Swiss range, used on vehicles assembled in Opole, Poland, such as the Ranger 570 |
| 57X | Polaris Slingshot three-wheeler, built in Spirit Lake and Milford (Iowa), then Huntsville from MY2017 |
| 5VP | Victory motorcycles, Polaris' former motorcycle brand, model years 1999 to 2017 |
Two sources stand behind every code in this table: Polaris' Part 565 filing or the vPIC register on one side, the Wikipedia WMI table or real recall-list VINs on the other. Snowmobile codes are left out because we found no second source. So is 56K, which belongs to Indian Motorcycle; Polaris sold its majority stake in Indian in the first quarter of 2026.
Polaris builds the same family of vehicles on two continents, and the VIN shows the route. A US-built Sportsman, a Mexican RZR and a Polish Ranger all follow one layout, yet each has its own code. Which one is in front of you?
A 2015 Sportsman is not a 1985 quad
Generic decoders apply the passenger-car rule and use position 7 to choose between two 30-year cycles. On a Polaris that character is part of the model number, often a digit, as in SEA57. One decoder we tried therefore turned a 2015 Sportsman 570 into a 1985 machine and a 2020 Ranger XP 1000 into a 1990 one. This page ignores position 7 and takes the later year.
Green means position 9 computes. On 4XA, 3NS, 3NE, 57X and 5VP a failure turns red, because these codes follow North American rules. On a TAP vehicle it shows amber, as the check digit is not compulsory in Europe. Both Opole VINs we tested passed, so amber on a TAP Ranger almost always means a mistyped character.
Every Polaris WMI on this page carries the model year in position 10, F for 2015, L for 2020, R for 2024. Because the letters repeat after 30 years, the code alone cannot separate 1985 from 2015. Common sense can: Polaris sold its first ATVs in 1985 and the Slingshot arrived as a 2015 model. Buying a quad that was first registered in Germany? The German registration certificate (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I) records the first-registration date in its field B; for a quad that date can trail the VIN's model year by a season.
| Code | Model year | Code | Model year |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 2010 | M | 2021 |
| B | 2011 | N | 2022 |
| C | 2012 | P | 2023 |
| D | 2013 | R | 2024 |
| E | 2014 | S | 2025 |
| F | 2015 | T | 2026 |
| G | 2016 | V | 2027 |
| H | 2017 | W | 2028 |
| J | 2018 | X | 2029 |

Polaris' own NHTSA filing defines them: 4XA for vehicles assembled in the US, 3NE for ATVs and 3NS for side-by-sides assembled in Mexico, TAP for vehicles assembled in Poland. 57X is the Slingshot and 5VP the former Victory motorcycle brand.
It depends on the model. On Ranger and GENERAL models Polaris stamps it on the left rear frame below the cargo box. On ATVs look at the frame near a front wheel: older Sportsman models have it on the left frame rail behind the left front wheel, the 2022 Sportsman XP 1000 Touring on the right front frame tube. On a Polaris snowmobile, check the tunnel: the VIN sits on its right-hand side. The model number sits on a separate label.
Yes. Polaris computes it on every off-road vehicle, the Slingshot and Victory motorcycles. Every clean VIN we tested passed, from Roseau, Huntsville, Monterrey and Opole alike, and so did some 1,600 Victory VINs from recall lists. If yours fails, compare it with the frame stamping before anything else; a ground-down or re-stamped frame rail is a reason to walk away.
Because a side-by-side can be registered as a tractor there. The two Opole-built Ranger 570s we found at a Danish auction were listed as Traktor; a Swedish 2018 Ranger XP 1000 was registered as Fordonsslag TR with EU category T1b, a 2012 Ranger 400 as T3. The VIN does not change with the registration: it still starts TAP or 4XA.
Colour, accessories, winch, cab, operating hours, service history. Positions 4 to 8 pin down the model family and engine size, not the trim pack a dealer added. Hours and mileage come from the display and the service book, the registration from the papers.
